Who Signed the Peace Agreement with Israel?
In September 2020, Israel signed landmark peace agreements with two Arab nations: the United Arab Emirates (UAE) and Bahrain. These agreements, known as the Abraham Accords, were brokered by the United States and mark a significant step towards normalization of relations between Israel and the Arab world.
So, who signed these agreements on behalf of the UAE and Bahrain? Let`s take a closer look.
The UAE was represented by its Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, Sheikh Abdullah bin Zayed Al Nahyan. Sheikh Abdullah is a member of the ruling family of the UAE and has held the position of Foreign Minister since 2006. He played a key role in negotiating the Abraham Accords and has been a vocal advocate for closer ties with Israel.
Bahrain, on the other hand, was represented by its Foreign Minister, Dr. Abdullatif bin Rashid Al Zayani. Dr. Al Zayani is a seasoned diplomat who has served as Bahrain`s ambassador to the United States, the United Kingdom, and the United Nations. He was appointed Foreign Minister in November 2018 and has been instrumental in leading Bahrain`s efforts to normalize relations with Israel.
The signing of the Abraham Accords was a historic moment for the Middle East, and the fact that the agreements were signed by high-level officials from both the UAE and Bahrain underscores the significance of the step that these countries have taken. The agreements have already started to bear fruit, with trade and tourism ties between Israel and the UAE and Bahrain opening up in the months since the signing.
Of course, the Abraham Accords are just the beginning of what could be a new era of cooperation and coexistence between Israel and the Arab world. Other countries, such as Sudan and Morocco, have also signaled a willingness to normalize ties with Israel. As more countries come on board, the hope is that the Middle East will become a more stable and prosperous region for all its inhabitants.
